Corps Marshal Orders Probe Into Benin Toll Gate Attack
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has commended the swift intervention of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force following a violent mob attack on the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office along the Benin–Lagos Expressway. The attack occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, shortly after FRSC operatives responded to a fatal crash involving two trucks around the Benin Toll Gate axis.
The collision reportedly claimed the life of one truck driver and left several FRSC personnel critically injured. Tragically, one of the injured officers later died despite receiving urgent medical care. In the aftermath of the crash, an enraged mob stormed and vandalised the FRSC Unit Command formation.
However, a prompt and coordinated response by security agencies helped to restore calm and prevent further escalation of violence.
Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal described the attack on FRSC personnel and facilities as “deeply regrettable and unacceptable,” stressing that the officers were on lawful duty to rescue victims and safeguard lives when the tragic incident occurred.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased truck driver, the fallen FRSC officer, and the entire workforce of the Corps. Mohammed has since ordered a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the crash, as well as the circumstances that triggered the mob action.
He assured that anyone found culpable will face justice in accordance with the law. Reaffirming the Corps’ commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads nationwide, the FRSC boss urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of FRSC initiatives.
