FRSC Reports 61% Drop in Tanker Deaths
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded a major milestone in its efforts to curb tanker and trailer-related accidents, achieving a significant 61.29% reduction in fatalities and a 15.53% decline in crash severity index in 2025.
These remarkable improvements have been attributed to the successful implementation of the Safe-to-Load Programme, driven by the strategic leadership of Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni.
Speaking at the flag-off of the 2026 Technical Training for FRSC Desk Officers stationed at petroleum depots and terminals in Lagos, the Corps Marshal described the results as strong evidence of the effectiveness of the Corps’ data-driven enforcement strategy and collaborative approach with key stakeholders.
He explained that the Safe-to-Load Programme, introduced in 2015 as part of Nigeria’s compliance with international safety standards for transporting hazardous materials, has significantly improved adherence within the petroleum haulage sector. Compliance with Class G Driver Licence requirements has risen from 58.2% at inception to 99.4%, while installation of essential safety systems such as API-standard leak-proof devices has reached 98.3%.
Despite the progress, the Corps Marshal reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to achieving zero fatalities.
He warned that any tanker that fails to meet Safe-to-Load standards will not be permitted to load, adding that all tanker-related crashes will be thoroughly investigated across the entire operational chain, including depot operators and vehicle owners.
He also condemned ongoing violations such as tampering with speed limiting devices and poor vehicle maintenance, describing them as serious threats to public safety.
Declaring a tougher enforcement stance, he stressed that “the era of impunity on Nigerian roads is over,” noting that the Safe-to-Load Programme has evolved into a critical national safety measure.
He urged all stakeholders—operators, drivers, and regulators—to maintain full compliance, emphasizing that every prevented accident saves lives, protects property, and conserves national resources.
The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to expanding technology-driven monitoring systems, enhancing personnel training, and strengthening partnerships with key industry bodies including NMDPRA, MEMAN, DAPPMAN, NARTO, NUPENG, and IPMAN.
