Just In: Rivers Lawmakers Set To Impeach Gov. Fubara

The members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

During a plenary session broadcast live on Channels Television on Thursday, Speaker Martins Amaewhule presided over the reading of the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Governor Fubara.

The notice, signed by 26 members of the House, claims that Fubara violated provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice would be officially served to the governor within the next seven days.

Similarly, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read out a separate notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Oduh.

It is believed that the development is as a result of the crisis that has bedevilled the state in recent times in addition to the differences between Fubara and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike for some time.

The impeachment process is being driven by lawmakers loyal to the Speaker of the House, Martin Chike Amaewhule, who is widely identified as a key ally of Wike.
