Oborevwori Flags Off N59.7bn Agbor/Uromi Flyover
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday flagged off the construction of the N59.7 billion Agbor/Uromi Junction Flyover in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, assuring Deltans of even development and safer roads across the state.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor described the project as a critical intervention to curb persistent traffic congestion and frequent accidents at the busy Agbor/Uromi Junction, which he said had claimed many lives and destroyed property over the years.
He explained that the flyover became necessary due to the dangerous interaction between vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians along the federal highway, worsened by poor traffic management.
Oborevwori disclosed that the contract for the design and construction of the project had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a completion timeline of 14 months.
According to him, the project comprises a 1.3-kilometre flyover bridge along the Uromi–Agbor Highway, dual carriageways with two lanes on each side, ramps, roundabouts, concrete drainage systems, kerbs, and solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety and sustainability.
Accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, and other top government officials, the governor described the corridor as a major economic and transportation link connecting the Eastern and Western Niger Delta and serving as a gateway to the North.
“Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this route. Its importance to the national economy cannot be overstated,” he said.
He added that the flyover would improve mobility, reduce travel time, stimulate economic activities, and protect the lives of thousands of Nigerians who use the route daily. He also noted that the project would create employment opportunities for engineers, artisans, labourers, transporters, and traders.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, Oborevwori said the state government had released N100 billion as special intervention funds, with N4 billion allocated to each of the 25 local government areas for infrastructure projects.
He listed other ongoing projects in Ika South, including a N15.4 billion contract for 13.3 kilometres of concrete drainage and five kilometres of road construction to tackle flooding and erosion, as well as the proposed N12 billion, 15-kilometre Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road.
Former Governor of the state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, described the flyover as a monumental project and commended Oborevwori for sustaining development continuity. He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, noting that they were positioning Nigeria for long-term stability.
The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, hailed the governor as an audacious leader and urged the people of Ika Nation to continue supporting his administration.
Representing Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Frederich Weiser thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in the company and assured that the project would be delivered on schedule and to the highest standards.
Other speakers, including NDDC Chairman, Mr. Chiedu Ebie; Chairman of Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior; traditional rulers, lawmakers, and community leaders, lauded the governor’s infrastructure drive and pledged their continued support.
