Breaking: Abba Yusuf Dumps NNPP Over Internal Crisis
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal crises and divisions within the party.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. In a resignation letter dated Friday, January 23, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor said his action was taken in the best interest of Kano State.
Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the NNPP for providing him with a political platform and support since 2022 but noted that unresolved leadership disputes and ongoing legal battles had weakened the party’s cohesion at both state and national levels.
According to him, the deepening disagreements have led to widespread disenfranchisement of members and cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable.
He stressed that his resignation followed careful reflection and was taken in good faith, without bitterness, reaffirming his commitment to peace, unity, and the development of Kano State.
The governor’s exit is said to be accompanied by 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
Acknowledging the resignation, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, praised Governor Yusuf’s performance in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment, describing him as one of the party’s most performing governors despite its lingering internal crisis.
