Rights Lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has commended former presidential candidate Peter Obi for joining the protest at the National Assembly on Tuesday against the newly proposed Electoral Act.

Adeyanju described Obi’s participation as a courageous and timely intervention, stating that the new Electoral Act represents an anti-people law and poses a serious threat to genuine electoral reform in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Monday, Adeyanju said the law, if allowed to stand, would undermine democratic principles and weaken public confidence in the electoral process.

“I commend Peter Obi for joining the protest at the National Assembly today against the new Electoral Act, which I believe is an anti-people law and a major hindrance to true electoral reform in Nigeria,” Adeyanju said.

He further called on political leaders across party lines to move beyond rhetoric and actively resist laws that weaken democracy, stressing that silence from leaders at such critical moments amounts to complicity.

The protest, which attracted civil society groups, youth activists, and opposition figures, was aimed at pressuring lawmakers to review and amend contentious provisions of the proposed legislation.

Demonstrators insisted that any electoral reform must strengthen transparency, protect voters’ rights, and ensure the credibility of future elections.

As of the time of filing this report, the National Assembly had yet to issue an official response to the protest.
