FRSC Warns Against Drunk Driving, Speeding on Valentine’s Day
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, drunk driving and reckless behaviour as Nigerians celebrate Valentine’s Day, warning that violators will face strict enforcement.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed that the Corps has activated a nationwide operational strategy to ensure the safety of road users during the festivities.
According to him, all operational and educational tools have been fully deployed to mitigate road traffic crashes typically associated with heightened celebrations.
Mohammed directed Commanding Officers nationwide to intensify patrols through massive deployment of officers and men to guarantee enhanced visibility, effective traffic control and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
He specifically ordered field operatives to make full use of breathalysers and radar guns to detect and apprehend drunk drivers and speed violators, stressing that suspected offenders must be tested and prevented from continuing their journeys to avert needless loss of lives and property.
While noting that Valentine’s Day is globally observed as a celebration of love in memory of Saint Valentine, the Corps Marshal emphasized that motorists must demonstrate love and responsibility by complying with all traffic laws.
“The Corps will not spare any driver caught violating established laws,” he warned.
He further urged members of the public to utilise the FRSC’s toll-free emergency line, 122, to report crashes, road obstructions or reckless driving for swift intervention.
Mohammed also called on parents and guardians to counsel their wards, particularly youths who statistics show are more vulnerable during festive periods, to conduct themselves responsibly.
The statement, signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer at FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the Valentine celebration.
