EFCC Arrests Three Over Naira Mutilation in Maiduguri
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three Maiduguri-based socialites over alleged Naira mutilation following a viral video that sparked outrage on social media.
The suspects — Jibrin Bukar, Dauda Adamu and Abdullahi Mohammed — were apprehended by operatives of the EFCC’s Maiduguri Zonal Directorate after they were allegedly seen spraying and mutilating Naira notes at a social event.
According to the anti-graft agency, the arrest followed actionable intelligence and digital tracking after the video clip circulated widely across social media platforms. Investigators subsequently traced the trio to Maiduguri in Borno State, where they were taken into custody.
The EFCC reiterated that abuse of the Naira, including spraying, defacing, or mutilating the currency, constitutes an offence under Nigerian law. The Commission stressed that enforcement efforts would continue against individuals who disrespect the national currency.
The suspects are currently undergoing investigation and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
