FRSC Launches Operation Safe Kugbo, Restricts Trucks at Peak Hours
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced a targeted enforcement campaign, “Operation Safe Kugbo,” aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing road crashes involving articulated vehicles along the busy Kugbo outbound corridor in the Federal Capital Territory.
The operation follows a recent intervention by the Corps Marshal, who constituted a high-level tactical team to assess persistent road traffic crashes along the AYA–Nyanya–Kugbo axis. The enforcement exercise is a direct outcome of the team’s recommendations and underscores the Corps’ resolve to translate safety assessments into concrete action.
Conceived by the Corps Marshal and being implemented at the sector level by the FCT Sector Commander, CC FN Theman, the initiative is anchored on Section 223 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) and relevant FCT traffic laws. It also supports the Corps’ 2026 Corporate Strategic Goal One, which emphasizes proactive measures to create safer road environments.
Central to the operation is the restriction of articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks from operating during peak traffic hours, a move designed to ease congestion and reduce crash risks on the heavily used corridor.
On the first day of enforcement, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Unit Commander of RS7.13 Nyanya, CRC WF Luka, led a joint team drawn from RS7.1 FCT and RS7.13 Nyanya commands. The team—comprising eight officers, twenty-two marshals, three patrol vehicles, and five motorbikes—successfully restricted 89 articulated vehicles from operating during designated peak periods.
FRSC reported that the exercise proceeded smoothly, with full cooperation from drivers and transport operators, contributing to a hitch-free operation.
Reaffirming its commitment to road safety, the Corps stated that it will continue to deploy data-driven and people-focused strategies to protect lives and property on Nigerian roads. It also urged operators of heavy-duty vehicles to comply with the restrictions, noting that sustained enforcement under Operation Safe Kugbo will remain a key measure to ensure safer and more efficient movement within the FCT.
