Obi Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation Over Governance Failures
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, , has called on President to resign over what he described as monumental failures in governance, worsening economic hardship, and rising insecurity across the country.
In a statement on Sunday, Obi said he was inspired to reflect on leadership accountability after listening to the British Prime Minister’s speech announcing his planned resignation amid growing public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and unfulfilled campaign promises.
According to Obi, the development in the United Kingdom underscores the importance of political responsibility and the need for leaders to accept the consequences of failing to deliver on their promises.
The former presidential candidate recalled that before the 2015 general elections, Tinubu had repeatedly called on then-President to resign over insecurity and economic hardship, particularly following the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.
Obi noted that during the 2023 election campaign, Tinubu promised to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, strengthen security, and improve the welfare of Nigerians, while also challenging voters not to support him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments.
He, however, argued that the current realities in the country show a significant decline in key sectors, including security, infrastructure, transportation, and the economy.
“Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has worsened in many parts of the country, kidnappings have increased, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi said.
He maintained that Nigeria’s present challenges demand political accountability and urged the President to step down in order to promote a culture of responsibility in public office.
According to him, such a move would send a strong message that leadership is a sacred trust and that failure in governance should attract consequences rather than impunity.
Obi added that building a culture of accountability is essential to securing a better future for Nigeria and achieving the vision of a “New Nigeria” that remains possible.
