FORMER Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has blamed the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration for making it difficult for him to afford medication for his late mother before her death.

Amaechi made the remarks during an interview while discussing the impact of economic hardship on Nigerians and the rising cost of essential commodities, including medicines.

During the interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the interviewer, Seun Okinbaloye, asked Amaechi whether he believed Tinubu’s policies were responsible for his mother’s death.

“Of course,” Amaechi responded.

When the interviewer suggested that his mother had died at an advanced age, Amaechi disagreed with the implication that her age alone explained her death.

He said his mother was healthy and cited the longevity of some of his friends and acquaintances as evidence that old age should not automatically be regarded as the cause of death.

According to Amaechi, the situation became particularly difficult after Tinubu assumed office. “By the time Tinubu came, it was difficult for me to buy drugs for my mother,” he said.

Amaechi’s mother, Mary Amaechi, died in July 2026 at the age of 89. Her death was followed by condolences from prominent Nigerians, including President Tinubu, who described her as a woman whose life reflected faith, kindness, perseverance and sacrifice.

Amaechi’s comments form part of his broader criticism of the Tinubu administration, particularly its economic policies and their effects on the cost of living.

However, while Amaechi has linked the difficulty of purchasing medication to his mother’s death, there is no independent evidence establishing that the President’s policies medically caused her death. The claim therefore remains Amaechi’s personal assessment of the circumstances surrounding his mother’s final period.
