Eight Zamfara APC Lawmakers Defect Ahead Of 2027
Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering a major political realignment in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers, who represent Mafara South, Maradun One, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi One, Bungudu North, Maru North and Kaura constituencies, announced their resignation during plenary in Gusau, the state capital.
Their defection represents a significant blow to the APC in the state and is expected to further alter the political dynamics within the 24-member Zamfara State legislature.
The lawmakers, however, did not immediately disclose the political party they intend to join following their exit from the APC.
Sources within the Assembly said the lawmakers are likely to move to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which currently controls the Zamfara State Government.
There are also indications that the lawmakers could align with the broader political movement associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his Rainbow Coalition.
However, the alleged alignment with the coalition has not been officially confirmed by any of the lawmakers.
The development comes amid increasing political realignments, defections and coalition-building across the country as politicians and political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
With eight lawmakers leaving the APC, the development could have far-reaching implications for the balance of power within the Zamfara State House of Assembly and the political calculations ahead of the next elections.
The mass resignation also adds to the growing signs of shifting political alliances in Zamfara, where political actors are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.
As of press time, the Zamfara State chapter of the APC had yet to issue an official reaction to the lawmakers’ resignation.
