ADC Blasts Sanwo-Olu Over Jakande Estate Demolition
The Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the alleged illegal demolition of parts of the Ilesa Jakande Housing Estate in Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, describing it as inhumane, unlawful, and a direct attack on the welfare of Lagos residents.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party accused the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of approving or permitting the demolition without due process, adequate notice, or humane resettlement plans for affected residents.
According to the ADC, the Jakande Housing Estate—home to over 5,000 Lagosians—has been thrown into turmoil following the demolition, with residents displaced and livelihoods destroyed.
The party recalled that the Jakande Housing Estates were originally built to provide affordable housing for low- and middle-income earners, noting that the recent action represents a total abandonment of that social contract.
The ADC also alleged that residents who staged peaceful protests were arrested and detained by security operatives allegedly acting on the orders of the Lagos State Government, describing the development as a dangerous suppression of citizens’ constitutional rights.
Tension reportedly escalated on Tuesday morning as residents and stakeholders mobilised to march to the Lagos State Government House in Alausa, Ikeja, to register their protest. The party disclosed that several media organisations had been invited to cover the protest as residents demand justice, transparency, and urgent government intervention.
The ADC called on Governor Sanwo-Olu to halt further demolition, release all detained protesters, and constitute an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government had yet to issue an official response. Residents insist they will continue to pursue peaceful and lawful means to ensure their rights are protected.
