FRSC Saves 132 Lives in 2025 Despite Rising Road Crashes — Corps Marshal
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded a reduction in road traffic fatalities in 2025, saving 132 lives nationwide despite increased vehicular movement and a rise in total crashes.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press conference to brief the public on Operation Zero and the Corps’ 2025 operational outing.
According to the FRSC, the number of people killed in road crashes declined from 5,421 in 2024 to 5,289 in 2025, representing a 2.4 per cent reduction, even as passenger and vehicle traffic increased significantly across the country.
Mohammed attributed the improvement in fatality figures to intensified enforcement, faster emergency response and improved rescue operations, particularly during peak travel periods such as the December festive season.
He noted that although total crashes rose from 9,570 in 2024 to 10,446 in 2025, and injuries increased by 7.2 per cent, enhanced post-crash interventions ensured that more victims survived road traffic incidents.
During the December 2025 festive operation, the Corps rescued 2,792 persons without injury, an increase from 2,697 recorded in the previous year, reflecting improved emergency response and life-saving capacity.
The FRSC also reported a major boost in enforcement activities in 2025, with 581,332 offenders arrested compared to 453,304 in 2024, while offences booked rose by over 30 per cent. The Corps said the increased enforcement was aimed at promoting compliance and strengthening road discipline nationwide.
In addition, passenger movement grew from 45.16 million in 2024 to 47.47 million in 2025, while total kilometres travelled increased by over 9 per cent, underscoring the scale of exposure managed by the Corps during the year.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to saving lives, announcing stricter enforcement against major causes of fatal crashes, including speeding, dangerous driving, drunk driving and overloading.
He commended the media for its partnership in promoting road safety and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Corps.
Mohammed assured Nigerians that the FRSC would intensify intelligence-led enforcement, speed management and targeted public enlightenment in 2026 to sustain and improve on the gains recorded in reducing road traffic deaths.
