Open Alliance Slams Senate Move to Halt Electronic Result Transmission

Open Alliance has strongly condemned the decision of the 10th Nigerian Senate to suspend the use of electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing it as a serious setback to Nigeria’s democratic advancement.

In a statement, the group said electronic transmission of results remains a vital safeguard against electoral manipulation, result tampering, and post-election disputes, stressing that its suspension reopens long-standing vulnerabilities in the electoral system.

Open Alliance warned that the decision undermines public trust in the electoral process and sends a negative signal to citizens, election observers, and the international community at a time when Nigerians are demanding greater accountability and transparency.

The organization emphasized that electronic transmission of results is not a partisan issue but a democratic necessity that protects the votes of Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious divides. It urged the Senate to focus on strengthening the system, addressing logistical challenges, and empowering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver credible elections.

Open Alliance called on the Senate to immediately reverse the decision and recommit to electoral reforms that promote free, fair, and credible polls. It also appealed to lawmakers to engage civil society groups, election experts, and citizens in open consultations aimed at improving the integrity of the 2027 general elections.

According to the group, Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when elections are transparent, secure, and trusted by the people, warning that any action that undermines these principles threatens the foundation of the nation’s democratic system.
