EFCC Arrests 3 Over Naira Abuse in Maiduguri

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three individuals in Maiduguri, Borno State, over alleged mutilation of the Nigerian currency following a viral social media video that sparked public outrage.

The suspects — Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad, and Bashir Musa — were apprehended by operatives of the EFCC’s Maiduguri Zonal Directorate after they were identified in a video showing them allegedly using a N500 note to clean mucus from their nose.

According to the Commission, the disturbing footage circulated widely across social media platforms, prompting swift action to track down those involved. Investigations led operatives to arrest the trio within the Maiduguri metropolis.

The EFCC stated that the suspects are currently in custody at the Maiduguri detention facility, where investigations are ongoing.

The anti-graft agency reiterated that abuse and mutilation of the Naira constitute offences under Nigerian law and warned against acts that undermine the integrity of the national currency.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
