The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced that Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the dates on Friday during a press conference in Abuja, stating that the commission has concluded arrangements for the election timetable and schedule of activities.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the delayed passage of the amended Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly. Political stakeholders have raised questions about how the pending amendments could impact preparations for the polls.

INEC had earlier, on February 4, indicated that it had finalized work on the election timetable despite the delay in legislative action. According to the commission, the timetable has already been submitted to lawmakers for their attention.

However, the electoral body cautioned that certain components of the schedule of activities may be subject to review, depending on when the amended Electoral Act is eventually passed into law.

The development signals the formal commencement of preparations for the 2027 general elections, as political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders begin to align strategies ahead of the critical national exercise.

Further details are expected as the commission releases a comprehensive breakdown of activities leading up to the polls.
