INEC Defends 2027 Poll Dates, Opens Door for Review

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has defended the dates announced for the 2027 General Election, insisting they were fixed strictly in line with constitutional and legal provisions, while also acknowledging growing stakeholder concerns over possible clashes with national observances.

In a press statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission clarified that the timetable was developed in compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

INEC explained that its Regulations and Guidelines, in place since 2019, clearly stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections must hold on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to be conducted two weeks later.

Based on these provisions, the Commission fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls.

However, the Commission acknowledged that concerns have been raised regarding the coincidence of the dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances, which some stakeholders fear could affect voter participation.

“Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Commission has taken due notice of concerns expressed by stakeholders,” the statement noted, adding that INEC remains sensitive to all legitimate issues that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections.

The electoral body disclosed that it is currently undertaking consultations and may, where necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the concerns — provided any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, assuring Nigerians that the public will be duly informed of any further developments.

The clarification comes amid heightened political attention following the official release of the 2027 election timetable, formally signaling the start of Nigeria’s electoral season.
