FRSC warns drivers after fatal tanker crash at Challenge–Gate axis, Ibadan
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m. along the Challenge–Gate axis at Bere, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The crash, which happened within the jurisdiction of the RS11.32 Oluyole Unit Command, involved six vehicles — a BOVAS DAF tanker (registration FMT662XA) and five tricycles with registration numbers JND799VE, TDE346QF, WEL205VD, TDE242QU, and GBR242QD.
According to preliminary findings, eleven persons were involved. Three sustained injuries, while two adults — one male and one female — lost their lives.
FRSC rescue teams evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Adeoyo Hospital morgue. The damaged vehicles were cleared to restore traffic flow, with the tricycles towed to Mapo Police Station and the tanker recovered by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority.
The Corps attributed the crash to dangerous driving linked to excessive speeding, noting that the tanker driver lost control, triggering a multiple collision with the tricycles.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed concern over the persistent rate of speed-related crashes nationwide, describing speeding as a “silent killer” that reduces reaction time and greatly increases crash severity.
He urged drivers — especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles — to maintain safe speeds, exercise caution in busy urban corridors, and prioritize safety over haste. Fleet owners were also called upon to strengthen driver training and enforce compliance with speed limits, while tricycle operators and other vulnerable road users were advised to remain vigilant and avoid risky maneuvers.
