EFCC clarifies UUTH incident, orders probe
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has issued a fresh clarification regarding the recent incident involving operatives of its Uyo Zonal Directorate and staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, insisting that no arrests were made during the visit.
In a statement signed by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the Commission explained that its operatives were at the hospital on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, solely to authenticate a document and not to carry out any arrest operation.
The anti-graft agency dismissed reports circulating online that hospital staff were arrested or detained, stressing that the workers who accompanied operatives to the Uyo Zonal Command were neither held nor mistreated.
The Commission, however, expressed concern over allegations that some hospital staff were brutalised during the incident. Although it noted that no physical evidence of injury had been presented, the EFCC disclosed that it had already ordered an investigation into the matter.
According to the statement, any operative found to have acted outside the Commission’s Standard Operating Procedure would face disciplinary action.
The EFCC also appreciated stakeholders who have intervened to ensure an amicable resolution of the issue, while urging the public not to allow “fifth columnists” exploit the incident to discredit Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.
