Adeyanju raises alarm over threats to Sarkin Dariya
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has raised concerns over alleged threats to popular social media personality and comedian Oguche Ugbede Kenneth, widely known as Sarkin Dariya, demanding that security agencies ensure his safety.
In a public statement issued on behalf of Sarkin Dariya, Adeyanju said his client had recently been subjected to a series of threats following his satirical and comedic commentaries on issues of public concern affecting Nigerians.
According to the lawyer, Sarkin Dariya has at all times exercised his constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression through lawful means, insisting that the threats against him are a serious matter that must not be ignored.
Adeyanju placed the relevant authorities on notice, stressing that they have a constitutional obligation to protect the comedian and guarantee his safety.
He warned that if any harm comes to Sarkin Dariya as a result of the reported threats or any failure by the authorities to provide adequate protection, those responsible—whether directly or indirectly—would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
The senior lawyer expressed confidence that the appropriate authorities would take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of his client.
The statement comes amid growing concerns over the safety of content creators, activists and public commentators who use satire and comedy to address governance and other issues of public interest in Nigeria.
