The convoy of former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, was reportedly attacked by suspected thugs in Benue State on Tuesday morning while he was on his way to visit victims of the Yelwata massacre.

According to reports from the state, Obi and members of his entourage were stopped while travelling towards Yelwata, a community that has remained at the centre of national concerns over killings, displacement and insecurity in Benue.

A video circulating online purportedly shows a crowd confronting the convoy, with stones and other objects reportedly thrown at vehicles in the procession.

Obi was reportedly quoted as alleging that the roadblock and attack were carried out by thugs allegedly mobilised by the Benue State Government.

However, the allegation could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report. There was also no immediate confirmation from the Benue State Government that Governor Hyacinth Alia or any government official directed supporters or thugs to obstruct Obi’s movement.

The incident has already sparked political reactions, coming against the backdrop of previous disagreements between Obi and the Alia administration over the former governor’s visits to Benue.

In April 2025, Obi had accused the Benue State Government of obstructing an earlier humanitarian visit to the state. He said his security team was stopped while travelling towards Makurdi after receiving communication that the state government could not guarantee the safety of visitors.

Tuesday’s reported incident comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity in Benue, particularly following the Yelwata killings, which drew widespread national attention to attacks on farming communities and internally displaced persons.

Obi has consistently called for stronger government action to protect vulnerable communities, prevent further bloodshed and provide support to victims of violence.

His reported attempt to visit Yelwata was understood to be part of his wider engagement with communities affected by insecurity and displacement.

As of the time of filing, there was no official statement from the Benue State Government, the Nigeria Police Force or Obi’s representatives giving a detailed account of the incident.

MO Media Headlines will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
