Tension gripped the Delta State Civil Service Secretariat in Asaba following a protest by workers over the reported death of a Director, allegedly after an assault involving the Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, and some of his aides.

The development reportedly led to a shutdown of activities at the Secretariat, as workers withdrew their services in protest and demanded that the circumstances surrounding the Director’s death be thoroughly investigated.

Addressing journalists during the protest, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, condemned the alleged incident and called for a full investigation.

Ofobruku said the matter would be thoroughly investigated, stressing that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He also announced that an emergency meeting of all affiliate unions would be convened to deliberate on the development, adding that workers would remain away from their duties pending further directives from the labour leadership.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, assured workers and members of the public that the state government would ensure that the matter was properly investigated.

Aniagwu said Governor Sheriff Francis Oborevwori was committed to ensuring that justice was served and that no stone would be left unturned in getting to the root of the incident.

The Area Commander, Asaba, ACP Alex Udeze, who was present at the Secretariat, said the police were invited following the unrest and responded promptly to maintain law and order.

The circumstances surrounding the Director’s death and the allegation of assault remain subject to investigation.
