Adeyanju Condemns Killing of NDC Member in Enugu, Demands Justice
…Calls on Tinubu, IGP to Order Urgent Investigation
Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned the reported killing of a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, describing political intolerance as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Adeyanju called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police to urgently investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice.
In a statement, the activist expressed concern over the use of violence in political engagements, warning that no Nigerian should be made to pay the ultimate price because of their political affiliation or beliefs.
He stressed that political intolerance undermines the fundamental freedoms upon which democracy is built, noting that citizens must be allowed to support political parties and express their political opinions without fear of intimidation, attacks or loss of life.
According to him, political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue, democratic participation and the rule of law rather than violence.
“No Nigerian should lose their life because of their political affiliation. Political differences must never be settled with bullets,” Adeyanju declared.
The human rights lawyer urged the Federal Government and security agencies to treat the incident with the urgency it deserves, stressing that a thorough investigation and prosecution of those found culpable would help reinforce public confidence in the justice system.
He maintained that protecting the lives and fundamental rights of citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations, remains essential to sustaining democratic governance and national stability.
Adeyanju’s call comes amid renewed concerns over political violence and intolerance, with the incident underscoring the need for political actors, security agencies and other stakeholders to uphold democratic values and ensure that disagreements do not degenerate into bloodshed.
He reiterated that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere where political competition is peaceful, human rights are respected and every citizen is free to exercise their political choices without fear.
