Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide has strongly condemned the reported threat to the life of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Edo State.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the group described the alleged threat as a serious danger to Nigeria’s democracy and national peace. GTI, a non-partisan human rights organization, stressed that any attempt to intimidate or threaten a political leader undermines democratic values, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights.

The organization called on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police to immediately deploy intelligence units to thoroughly investigate the alleged threat and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice without delay.

GTI warned that Nigeria’s democracy must not be reduced to a battlefield of harassment or violence, emphasizing that political competition should be based on issues, healthy debate, and respect for differing views.

“Political rivalry should never translate into threats to life or actions capable of destabilizing our nation,” the statement read, urging leaders across party lines to promote tolerance, dialogue, and peaceful engagement.

The group maintained that anyone found guilty, regardless of political status or affiliation, must face the full weight of the law.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. Let us safeguard it together,” said Mr. Bibi Oduku, Chairman of GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide, who addressed journalists alongside legal practitioners and other activists in the Federal Capital Territory.
