El-Rufai’s temporary release humane, must follow due process – Adeyanju

Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has described the decision to grant former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to attend his mother’s burial as humane and commendable.

Adeyanju, however, stressed that the decision must be backed by a valid court order, noting that El-Rufai was initially remanded in custody by the court.

He said allowing El-Rufai to attend the funeral reflects a necessary balance between the demands of justice and respect for fundamental human dignity, adding that such a gesture should not be mistaken for an attempt to evade accountability.

According to him, bail—whether administrative or judicial—should be seen as a lawful and compassionate accommodation in deserving circumstances.

Adeyanju concluded that the move by the authorities demonstrates empathy while still upholding the rule of law.
