Adeyanju urges Tinubu to stop anti-democratic forces, warns against one-party state

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently halt what he described as growing anti-democratic actions within and around the current administration.

In a strongly worded statement, Adeyanju warned that efforts to weaken opposition parties and allegedly use institutional mechanisms, including the courts, to limit their participation in the 2027 general elections pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

He cautioned that advisers suggesting a weakened opposition would improve the President’s re-election prospects are misguided, stressing that such strategies could ultimately damage both the administration and the country’s democratic foundations.

Adeyanju expressed concern over what he sees as a pattern of political suppression, noting that earlier developments affecting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and more recent issues involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) point to a broader attempt to edge Nigeria toward a one-party system.

According to him, these developments risk eroding public trust in democratic institutions and could have long-term implications for national stability. He added that the situation is drawing increasing attention from the international community and key stakeholders.

The activist also called on former Nigerian presidents and respected statesmen to speak out, describing the moment as critical for the preservation of democratic values.

“This is a defining period for Nigeria’s democracy,” Adeyanju stated, urging all citizens and leaders to resist any moves that could undermine political pluralism and the right to electoral choice.
