VATLAD commends EFCC chairman over apology to UUTH medical staff
The Vanguard for Transparent Leadership and Democracy (VATLAD) has commended the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his swift public apology following the reported invasion of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) by some operatives of the commission.
In a statement issued on Thursday, National President of VATLAD, Igbini Odafe Emmanuel, described the EFCC chairman’s response as commendable and a demonstration of humility, accountability and leadership.
According to the group, the apology and condemnation of the reported assault and arrest of medical personnel, including a professor and other staff members, have helped restore public confidence in the commission’s anti-corruption campaign.
VATLAD also praised the EFCC chairman for promising that such incidents would not reoccur and for directing investigations and disciplinary measures against operatives allegedly involved in the incident.
“The action of the chairman has gone a long way in reassuring Nigerians that professionalism, discipline and respect for institutions will remain central to the commission’s operations,” the statement said.
The group noted that some leaders in similar positions could have reacted with arrogance or intimidation, but said the EFCC chairman instead chose accountability and transparency.
VATLAD urged the commission to continue strengthening professionalism in its operations while remaining steadfast in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
The organisation further pledged its continued support and cooperation with the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance in Nigeria.
