FRSC Warns Motorists to Drive with Caution Amid Hazy Weather

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists across the country to exercise increased caution following the hazy weather conditions currently affecting several parts of Nigeria, which have resulted in poor visibility on major highways.

In a statement issued by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps noted that the prevailing dust haze, largely caused by seasonal atmospheric conditions, poses serious risks to road users. According to the FRSC, reduced visibility under such conditions can significantly increase the likelihood of road traffic crashes if drivers fail to take adequate precautions.

Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, mni, stressed the importance of deliberate caution and strict adherence to traffic regulations. He warned that hazy weather and dust haze impair drivers’ vision and reaction time, making speeding even more dangerous. He therefore appealed to motorists to slow down, obey speed limits, and adopt defensive driving habits to prevent avoidable crashes.

In view of the reduced visibility associated with the dust haze, the FRSC advised motorists to strictly comply with traffic rules and maintain safe driving practices at all times. Drivers were specifically urged to reduce speed, observe prescribed speed limits, especially on affected highways, maintain safe following distances, and ensure that headlights, tail lights, and brake lights are fully functional and properly used, even during daytime when visibility is poor.

The Corps also cautioned against dangerous driving behaviours such as wrongful overtaking, over-speeding, and distracted driving, while advising motorists to keep windscreens clean and wipers in good condition to enhance visibility.

Commercial vehicle drivers were further advised to prioritise passenger safety by avoiding unnecessary speed and ensuring full compliance with road safety regulations, particularly during periods of dust haze.

The FRSC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads, assuring the public that its patrol teams are on high alert to monitor traffic flow, enforce compliance, and provide prompt assistance when necessary.
