The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to roll out a nationwide Proof of Address (PoA) initiative aimed at strengthening national security, enhancing economic planning, and improving governance across Nigeria.

The resolution was reached on Wednesday, February 19, 2026, during a courtesy visit by ALGON officials to the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The delegation was led by Lead Technical Partner, Prince Segun Obayendo, alongside Abdulmajeed Abubakar, Deputy Director (Political), Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

Speaking on behalf of EFCC Executive Chairman, the Commission’s Secretary, Muhammed Hammajoda, assured ALGON of the anti-graft agency’s full support in driving the new initiative.

“We will key into it and we will drive the process. Whatever collaboration you need from now on, we are going to work with you,” Hammajoda said.

He stressed that the Proof of Address system would significantly aid the Commission’s investigative and prosecutorial processes, particularly in tracing ownership of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.

“Proof of Address is always an issue. We have a property and we want to prove its ownership, so address plays a vital role in proof of ownership. Whether the individual is there as a tenant or as the owner of the house, when we go to court it will not be contested,” he explained.

Abubakar disclosed that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) is collaborating with ALGON on the implementation of the PoA scheme across all 774 local government areas in the country. According to him, the initiative is designed to provide every resident with a secure and verifiable address to support good governance, service delivery, national security, and economic planning.

He noted that the system would establish a comprehensive database of verifiable addresses to enable security agencies to effectively track and mitigate criminal activities nationwide.

“ALGON represents all the 774 local government areas, making it the ideal partner to ensure the Proof of Address system is implemented at the community level. The OSGF oversees the rollout and ensures Ministries, Departments and Agencies adopt the PoA for official purposes,” Abubakar stated.

On his part, Obayendo described the PoA concept as a critical step toward establishing accurate citizen location data and demographic profiling. He added that the initiative would leverage existing identification frameworks, including the National Identification Number (NIN), to ensure credibility and reliability of the address system.

The collaboration marks a significant move by the Federal Government to institutionalize a standardized national address system capable of supporting anti-corruption efforts, security operations, and data-driven governance across Nigeria.
