EFCC blocks substandard power lines contract
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed how it stopped a contractor from executing a federal power project with fake and substandard transmission lines that could have endangered lives and critical infrastructure nationwide.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving the Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (MEMSA), Olusegun Adesayo, during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters.
According to Olukoyede, the Commission investigated the contractor in 2024 and confirmed that fake transmission lines had been imported for a project awarded by the Ministry of Power. The EFCC subsequently advised the ministry to blacklist the contractor, averting what he described as a potential national disaster.
He emphasized that the EFCC’s mandate extends beyond financial crimes to economic sabotage and pledged continued collaboration with MEMSA to strengthen compliance, transparency, and safety standards in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Earlier, Adesayo said the visit was aimed at deepening cooperation on intelligence sharing, procurement oversight, investigations into substandard electrical materials, and public sensitization. He reaffirmed MEMSA’s commitment to enforcing technical regulations to ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of electrical installations nationwide.
Both agencies agreed that stronger regulation, anti-corruption enforcement, and internal reforms are essential to protecting public infrastructure and improving power supply across the country. 🇳🇬
